DESCRIPTION:Next Webinar: Leopold’s Preserve: A Model for Wise Land Use\nDate: Monday\, June 24\, 12:00 pm Pre-registration required. \nDescription: Leopold’s Preserve\, a 380-acre park with more than 7 miles of trails located in Haymarket\, Virginia\, was created as part of a housing development project. The developer acquired a 500-acre parcel of land\, carved out a slight portion for a clustered residential community\, then used the profits to protect and fund the maintenance of the remaining acreage as public open space. In this presentation\, participants will learn about the principles of wise land use that influenced the creation of Leopold’s Preserve\, policies governing the preservation of open space in Virginia\, and the educational programs and environmental best practices taking place at Leopold’s Preserve. \nPresenter: Scott C. Plein is the Chairman and President of the White House Farm Foundation\, an environmental nonprofit based in Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Scott is deeply involved in many other charitable organizations\, including the American Horticultural Society (Chairman)\, the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (past Board Member)\, and Asian American Success (past Board Member). DESCRIPTION:Conference Theme –\nConnections: Humans\, nature\, and their mutual impacts \nOur 2024 Virginia Master Naturalist conference theme focuses on the role that VMN volunteers can play in building positive connections between people and the rest of the natural world in which we exist. Research shows that time spent in nature has positive benefits for human physical\, mental\, and social well-being. Unfortunately\, individuals often face barriers to spending more time in nature or do not have correct information about natural resources. And\, humans’ impacts on species\, ecosystems\, and natural resources can be positive or negative\, depending on our actions. \nVirginia Master Naturalist volunteers are well-positioned to help people build more positive connections to nature. They can provide safe and enjoyable experiences in nature along with research-based information through their educational programs. They can also steward publicly accessible natural areas so that they are better spaces for both humans and native flora and fauna. SUMMARY:💡VMN CE Webinar: Virginia Gray Fox Project
DESCRIPTION:Description: This webinar will include reasoning for\, methodology\, and preliminary results of the Virginia Gray Fox Project (VGFP). The VGFP is a collaborative project between Virginia Tech and Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. The project consists of a statewide remote camera trap survey to establish the current distribution of gray foxes and exploration of historical data to assess evidence for gray fox distributional decline. Out of public interest and the sheer size of the project\, the VGFP has grown to include a community collaboration in which members of the commonwealth are actively participating in data collection and data processing. The status of these efforts and the plan for our second field season will be discussed. \nPresenter: Victoria Monette is a second-year Wildlife Conservation PhD student at Virginia Tech working in Dr. Marcella Kelly’s lab. She is broadly interested in carnivore ecology\, movement\, and spatiotemporal interactions among carnivores. Her PhD research will include a state-wide camera survey to determine current gray fox distribution\, quantify evidence of presumed gray fox decline across VA\, and determine the relative impacts of bottom-up (i.e.\, habitat change) versus top-down (i.e.\, interspecific competition) ecological pressures on gray foxes using an occupancy modeling framework. She will create a current distribution map of gray fox occurrence across the state and use historic camera surveys to assess evidence of decline. SUMMARY:💡Member CE: VMN Webinar: Butterfly population trends in America north of Mexico and their most likely drivers
DESCRIPTION:Description: Mounting evidence shows that insects are declining world-wide\, leading to the so-called “insect apocalypse”. Unfortunately\, this is also true for butterflies in America and Canada. Leslie Ries will present the evidence showing patterns and trajectories of butterfly declines here in American north of Mexico. She will also summarize a recent study examining the most likely drivers. This story is complicated\, but she’ll show that in the 10 years following the 2003 release of seed-coated neonicotinoids\, that class of pesticides appears to have the biggest impact on butterfly population declines. She will also be emphasizing an often untold part of this story which is that the only reason scientists can do this research is the efforts of thousands of on-the-ground volunteers who participate in monitoring programs like the North American Butterfly Association’s count program and regional networks that do more intensive surveys\, including new programs in the Carolinas and Blue Ridge Mountains. With the efforts of community scientists\, we will be able to continue to amass the evidence we need on declines and causes that will hopefully allow us to turn the tide on this tragic loss of biodiversity. \nPresenter: Leslie Ries is an associate professor at Georgetown University studying how global change impacts biodiversity with a focus on butterflies in America north of Mexico. In addition to carrying out lab\, field\, and “big data” research on butterflies\, she is the co-director of the North American Butterfly Monitoring Network\, which provides data management support for the vast majority of groups that run programs where volunteers collect structured survey data. She is also excited to be a new board member of the North American Butterfly Association. Leslie is a native of the DMV\, growing up and now living in suburban Maryland. \nLeslie Ries is a co-author of the recent study you may have seen in the newsshowing widespread butterfly declines in the United States using volunteer-collected data sets–including butterfly counts that many of our VMNs have contributed to! \nRegistration: Pre-registration required to participate in the live Zoom. Pre-conference field trips and activities will take place during the day on Friday and the main event will run Friday evening through Sunday mid-day.   \n\n\n\nWhereOur Pocahontas and Riverine Chapters welcome VMN volunteers from across Virginia to the Richmond region. We will be based at the Westin Richmond in Richmond\, Virginia. \n\n\n\nWhatThe Virginia Master Naturalist Statewide Conference and Volunteer Training is an opportunity for VMN volunteers to share ideas and learn from each other\, to participate in high-quality continuing education sessions\, and to learn about a region of Virginia that may be different from their home communities.  \n\n\n\nEach year\, one or more of our local VMN chapters serve as the host chapter(s) for the conference\, helping to choose programming that showcases their local natural areas\, presenters\, and style.  The programming includes both on-site sessions and off-site field trips to visit natural resource highlights of the area.  We emphasize hands-on learning and skill-building\, trying to choose sessions that relate to the education\, citizen science\, and stewardship volunteer work that VMN volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWhoDue to the nature and limited space of our VMN conference\, only certified VMNs\, VMN members\, VMN trainees\, and partners from our state agency sponsors (including chapter advisors) may attend.
