DESCRIPTION:Next Webinar: Leopold’s Preserve: A Model for Wise Land Use\nDate: Monday\, June 24\, 12:00 pm Pre-registration required. \nDescription: Leopold’s Preserve\, a 380-acre park with more than 7 miles of trails located in Haymarket\, Virginia\, was created as part of a housing development project. The developer acquired a 500-acre parcel of land\, carved out a slight portion for a clustered residential community\, then used the profits to protect and fund the maintenance of the remaining acreage as public open space. In this presentation\, participants will learn about the principles of wise land use that influenced the creation of Leopold’s Preserve\, policies governing the preservation of open space in Virginia\, and the educational programs and environmental best practices taking place at Leopold’s Preserve. \nPresenter: Scott C. Plein is the Chairman and President of the White House Farm Foundation\, an environmental nonprofit based in Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Scott is deeply involved in many other charitable organizations\, including the American Horticultural Society (Chairman)\, the Potomac Riverkeeper Network (past Board Member)\, and Asian American Success (past Board Member). Unfortunately\, individuals often face barriers to spending more time in nature or do not have correct information about natural resources. And\, humans’ impacts on species\, ecosystems\, and natural resources can be positive or negative\, depending on our actions. \nVirginia Master Naturalist volunteers are well-positioned to help people build more positive connections to nature. They can provide safe and enjoyable experiences in nature along with research-based information through their educational programs. They can also steward publicly accessible natural areas so that they are better spaces for both humans and native flora and fauna. DESCRIPTION:Description: Similar to how weather forecasts are used to make decisions ranging from what to wear to disaster preparation\,  forecasts of ecological systems are increasingly being used to guide environmental decision-making.  This talk will introduce ecological forecasting concepts along with applications in forest and freshwater ecosystems. \nPresenter: Dr. Quinn Thomas is a Professor in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech\, with a joint appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences.  He is also a Faculty Fellow in Data Science. Learn how to create opportunities for informal or spontaneous interpretation.  We’ll also discuss design for signage\, pop-up exhibits\, and tables as well as incorporating hands-on and minds-on activities to captivate your audience and inspire them to seek more from your organization. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Angela Yau is the Nature Program Facility Manager at Locust Grove Nature Center with Montgomery Parks\, a Certified Interpretive Trainer with the National Association for Interpretation\, a Registered Coach with the National Park Service\, a yoga teacher\, and a historical clothier.  She started with a Masters in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida\, specializing in human dimensions and interpretive and ecotourism planning.  She has worked in interpretation of cultural and natural resources and training staff and volunteers for over 30 years and loves helping people be the voice of the resource.  Angela has a passion for sharing the stories that help people to connect\, care for\, and conserve these precious resources. \n\n\n\nLink: https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/81632845260
