We also will look for common and red-throated loons\, horned and pied-billed grebes\, tundra and mute swans\, and many types of ducks. \nThe walk\, offered in partnership with CNWR\, will be on Saturday\, January 25\, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am\, starting at Tom’s Cove Visitors Center.  It is free\, except for the CNWR entrance fee. Note that per VIMS you may park on Atlantic Avenue along the yellow curbs. \n\n5:00 pm social time\n5:30 business meeting\n6:00 pm speaker\n\n\nAbout the Speaker \n \nSophia Hoffman is a coastal and estuarine ecologist with a passion for studying the dynamics of salty environments\, from ghost forests and marshes to lagoons and barrier islands. Since 2022\, she has been a research specialist at the University of Virginia’s Coastal Research Center (CRC) in Oyster\, Virginia\, home to the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research Program. \n\nAt the CRC\, Sophia is integral to facilitating and conducting long-term ecological research\, overseeing laboratory operations\, and navigating research vessels along the ESVA seaside. She works closely with a collaborative team on diverse projects that deepen our understanding of coastal ecosystems. \n\nSophia earned her B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Michigan in 2018 and completed her M.S. in Biology from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi during the pandemic in 2020. Her research background spans a variety of ecosystems\, including the bogs of northern Michigan\, the salt marshes\, streams\, and mangrove forests of Texas\, and the wetlands of South Florida.

SUMMARY:Water Quality Sampling with LTER
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Coast Reserve-Long Term Ecological Research (VCR-LTER) is looking for 4-6 volunteers to assist in conducting our quarterly water quality monitoring on January 15th (with a weather backup day of 1/16). \n\nThe day usually starts about 9am\, and all boats are off the water by 2pm. We will leave from the lab in Oyster\, with half the crew heading to Red Bank and half going out of Oyster.\nEach volunteer will be assigned an instrument and asked to provide readings at each station from the inlet to the harbor.\n\nVolunteers need very warm clothes (no one is getting in the water)\, and we have some boots on site to borrow.\n\nAnyone who helps in the field is also welcome to stay a few hours to help process the samples upon returning to the lab.\nVCR-LTER staff often stay that evening for a cookout\, which volunteers are also welcome to join.\n\nYou must sign up with VCR-LTER to participate. Because of her background in wildlife ecology\, Gabrielle is also seeking to connect the changes to the stream environment\, due to invasion and restoration\, to the animal community through acoustic monitoring. DESCRIPTION:VES Land Trust has a few more Fall opportunities on the calendar! We are excited to offer Accomac and Northampton Elementary schools the opportunity to visit Brownsville Preserve and participate in a nature walk covering a variety of habitats\, living vs. nonliving\, and natural resources.\n\n\nMonday November 25th – Kegotank classes\n\nThe day will look something like this:  (** time adjustments will be made according to schools distance to Preserve) \n\n\n\n9:15/9:45 a.m. Students arrive\, buses drop off at the TNC office at Brownsville Preserve\,  11332 Brownsville Rd\, Nassawadox\, VA 23413\n9:45 a.m. Welcome and introduction by VESLT\n10 a.m. 1 mile nature walk with scavenger hunt on the Birding and Wildlife Trail\n11:15 a.m. Activities – identifying bones and shells\, art reflection/journaling based on the scavenger hunt\, platform looking over the marsh and to the Barrier Islands\n12 p.m. Lunch (please bring your lunch\, we will have some snacks available for volunteers)\n1 p.m. 1 mile walk back to the office where busses pick up\n\nIdeally\, we will have enough volunteers (6-8) to co-lead a class of students or to break the classes into smaller groups. I will also be looking for help leading the shell/bone identifying and marsh/Barrier Island viewing platform activities. For the shell/bone identification\, TNC lends us a bin of shells and bones collected locally. For the viewing platform\, the leader will take 5 students at a time up to look out over the marsh. You can talk about marsh habitat\, tides\, and the Barrier Islands with them. Also\, we will be voting to approve Chapter bylaws and elect new treasurer. \nAll 2024 speaker meetings will be the third Wednesday of every other month at Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Eastern Shore Laboratory\, Seaside Hall\, 40 Atlantic Street\, Wachapreague. Note that per VIMS you may park on Atlantic Avenue along the yellow curbs. \nNovember Speaker: Christina Trapani will discuss “Understanding Marine Debris in Virginia: Sources and Solutions.” \nSpeaker Bio: Christina Trapani moved to Virginia Beach from Rhode Island in 1995 after receiving her degree in Business Management from Western Carolina University. She worked with stranded sea turtles and marine mammals with the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program for about 12 years\, where she witnessed the impacts of marine debris on the animals she worked with and the beaches she worked on. She led her first International Coastal Cleanup in 2002 and in 2008 started Eco Maniac Company\, a retail business that offers reusable alternatives to single-use plastics. \nAfter leaving the Aquarium in 2013\, Christina started working as a marine debris researcher and consultant to organizations such as the Virginia Aquarium and Clean Virginia Waterways. She’s been involved in several litter research\, prevention and education projects in Virginia including a statewide marine debris monitoring program\, a balloon litter monitoring program\, a cigarette litter prevention program\, and a litter prevention and education program called Keep It Beachy Clean. \nIn August of 2024\, Christina became the Executive Director of Clean Virginia Waterways and is looking forward to this new role and all the new opportunities to help solve the issue of plastic pollution. DESCRIPTION:Picture the Shore is a photography contest and art exhibit designed to highlight the work of student\, amateur\, and professional photographers and to connect the public to the natural beauty and environment of the Eastern Shore through visual art. \nThe exhibit opens with a reception on Friday\, November 8th and runs through November 22nd at the Barrier Islands Center. At the reception\, photographers and VES Land Trust staff will be present to talk more about the photos\, the artistic process\, conservation\, and the land. Attendees will also have a chance to vote for their favorite photo in the amateur and student categories with the People’s Choice Award. The award for professional photographers will be chosen by a panel of judges. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. All photographs will be available for sale with 35% of proceeds benefiting VES Land Trust and their conservation mission.
