SUMMARY:🧤 Volunteer: Catch the King Data Collection Training
DESCRIPTION:Catch the King is an annual community science initiative that mobilizes volunteers to map the extent of tidal flooding during perigean spring tides\, also known as “king tides.” \n\n\n\nThese tides represent the highest astronomical tides of the year\, occurring when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun align\, and the Moon is at its closest approach to Earth (perigee). \n\n\n\nParticipants in the event use a mobile app that collects location-based data points along the water’s edge at peak high tide. This in-person training session will prepare participants to use the app and collect data. \n\n\n\nThis crowdsourced data collection effort contributes to high-resolution mapping of tidal inundation areas\, providing valuable empirical data for hydrodynamic modeling and flood forecasting. \n\n\n\nLog your hours in Better Impact under category 14.

SUMMARY:💡 CE: Virginia Master Naturalist Statewide Conference and Volunteer Training 2025
DESCRIPTION:Registration required. \n\n\n\nOverviewWhenThe 2025Virginia Master Naturalist Statewide Conference and Training will be Friday\, September 5 through Sunday\, September 7. Pre-conference field trips and activities will take place during the day on Friday and the main event will run Friday evening through Sunday mid-day.   \n\n\n\nWhereOur Pocahontas and Riverine Chapters welcome VMN volunteers from across Virginia to the Richmond region. We will be based at the Westin Richmond in Richmond\, Virginia. \n\n\n\nWhatThe Virginia Master Naturalist Statewide Conference and Volunteer Training is an opportunity for VMN volunteers to share ideas and learn from each other\, to participate in high-quality continuing education sessions\, and to learn about a region of Virginia that may be different from their home communities.  \n\n\n\nEach year\, one or more of our local VMN chapters serve as the host chapter(s) for the conference\, helping to choose programming that showcases their local natural areas\, presenters\, and style.  The programming includes both on-site sessions and off-site field trips to visit natural resource highlights of the area.  We emphasize hands-on learning and skill-building\, trying to choose sessions that relate to the education\, citizen science\, and stewardship volunteer work that VMN volunteers do. \n\n\n\nWhoDue to the nature and limited space of our VMN conference\, only certified VMNs\, VMN members\, VMN trainees\, and partners from our state agency sponsors (including chapter advisors) may attend.

SUMMARY:Bald Eagle Release at Kiptopeke State Park!
DESCRIPTION:From the Wildlife Center of Virginia: \n\n\n\nWe have exciting news! We’re releasing a Bald Eagle back to the wild on Thursday\, August 28 (https://wildlifecenter.org/news-events/news/2025/bald-eagle-release-kiptopeke-state-park) —and you’re invited to the release! \n\n\n\nBald Eagle #25-2450 was admitted on June 24 from Norfolk\, Virginia. The fledgling had been found grounded for more than a week\, with no parents observed in the area. Upon admission\, the Center’s veterinary team determined that the eagle was thin and suffered from subclinical lead poisoning\, with a lead level of 0.056 ppm. \n\n\n\nAfter one round of chelation therapy to remove the lead\, the eagle was deemed healthy and moved to a large outdoor flight pen to begin flight conditioning. At the end of July\, the eagle began undergoing daily flight exercises with our rehabilitation team to rebuild strength; by late August\, the patient was officially cleared for release! \n\n\n\nThe eagle will be released back into the wild on Thursday\, August 28\, at 1:00 p.m. at Kiptopeke State Park. Staff from the Wildlife Center will give a brief educational presentation before opening the crate and watching the eagle take flight. \n\n\n\nJoin us to witness this special moment! This release is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to RSVP with their name and the number of people in their party through this webform. SUMMARY:💡 CE: Blue Ridge PRISM Webinar: Documenting Invasive Plants with Herbaria: A Tutorial with Dr. Andrea Weeks
DESCRIPTION:Description: Join the webinar to learn how you can report your observations to the central scientific resource for county-level plant distributions\, the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora https://vaplantatlas.org/. These maps are incorporated into the Flora of Virginia app (https://floraofvirginia.org/flora-app/) and are an ever-growing resource for understanding what plant species grow where in the Commonwealth. Because of the speed of biological invasions\, creating accurate and up-to-date distribution maps for non-natives and invasives is particularly challenging. \n\n\n\nJoin the webinar to learn how you can help us fill the “gaps in the maps” with vouchered specimens and a simple reporting protocol! \n\n\n\nNote: To be recognized by the Department of Conservation and Recreation Natural Heritage Program\, all plants must be documented with one of the Commonwealth’s herbaria. In this workshop\, Dr. Weeks will demonstrate how to collect and submit plant samples for documentation. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Pre-registration required. This is a free online webinar. Those who register will receive a copy of the recording. \n\n\n\nLog your hours under Better Impact Category 2\, Continuing Education.

The count will last as long as you do! We appreciate your participation – there is no requirement to spend a particular amount of time.\n\n\n\nMeet-up Location: FORMER Northampton Middle School\, 7247 Young StreetMachipongo\, VA (NOTE: No restrooms are available.)\n\n\n\nFee: ESMN will cover the $3.00 per person NABA fees.\n\n\n\nSuggested Attire: Dress and prepare for hot/humid\, buggy\, weather and walking in natural environments.\n\n\n\nRefreshments: Bring water and snacks/food as needed. It will most likely be very hot so hydration is important. Safety first.\n\n\n\nVolunteer Service Hours: Eastern Shore Master Naturalists can log their volunteer hours under Better Impact under Category 14 – Annual Butterfly Count – Eastern Shore/Northern Northampton County.\n\n\n\nVIDEO: There is a butterfly identification video you can review prior to the count.\n\n\n\n\nTeam Roles \n\n\n\nParticipants will be divided into teams to cover roles and mix expertise levels. \n\n\n\n\nLeader – point person for team. Ensures members go to specified locations timely.\n\n\n\nSpotters – alert team members to a butterfly they have observed (NO skill required!). Note: everyone on the team can spot! Photos are very helpful.\n\n\n\nScribe/compiler – records the number of butterflies/species observed for each location and then calculates an overall total. Forms will be provided for recording counts. If you cannot make a firm ID the scribe should document as much information as possible to assist in later identification.\n\n\n\nDrivers – each team will decide how they want to manage transportation – carpool or separate vehicles.\n\n\n\nIdentifiers – team members who have sufficient familiarity to identify the species observed.\n\n\n\n\nTips for a Good Counting Experience \n\n\n\nHere are some suggestions for being prepared and having as pleasant an experience as possible: \n\n\n\n\nThink about how many hours you want spend counting butterflies. Some prefer to stop after a few hours while other like to do it all day. \n\n\n\nCameras\, binoculars\, and butterfly guides are great tools to have with you. Taking photos whenever you can is highly recommended\, especially if you are unable to ID the butterfly in the field. Also\, it’s great to include photos with any reporting.\n\n\n\nPlease DO NOT net or touch any butterflies. This activity should be as unobtrusive to the butterflies and their neighbors as possible.\n\n\n\nButterflies and Skippers will be counted – Moths are not considered for this count. You will have a list of species we are most likely to see.\n\n\n\n\nHere is the 15 mile-radius count area:
