DESCRIPTION:Per Jim McDaniel: \nWe have planned two workdays to clear some the invasives at Brinkley.  And we have plenty!   Paul Anderson and I took out about 100 small ailanthus and callery pears last month but there are plenty of targets left including privet\, wineberry\, and multiflora roses! \nBased on what I have learned and the season\,  the jobs would be physical removal/pulling of small plants\, cutting and treating stumps of larger plants with triclopyr [herbicide]  and either “basal bark” treating  or “hack and squirt” treating some of the larger ones.  [I may also do some  foliar spraying of herbicide on the multiflora rose that is appearing.  Herbicide use is limited by state law.] \nI have the chemicals and applicators.  Volunteers will need to bring any tools they want to use – loppers\, weeders\, hatchets\, etc. – and protective gear like gloves.  Eye protection and a face mask/respirator are optional.   Please wear long sleeves and long pants to prevent skin exposure to chemicals. We have working restrooms\, but you will need to bring your own water and snacks. \nWeather permitting this is planned for Wednesday\, April 2 and 9.\n\nLog your hours under Better Impact Category 8\, Brinkley/Trail and Habitat Maintenance.

DESCRIPTION:The VCR LTER is looking for 1 or 2 volunteers who are able to assist with drone work on Cobb Island March 10-13. This work is a unique opportunity to see both North and South Cobb Island in their current separated forms. \n\nThis fieldwork will be long days on the island\, but not too physically draining.  If everything goes smoothly\, we may not be going out all four days.\nYou may sign up for one or more days. You must be available for the entire time. As of now\, the schedule is 7:30am- 4pm\, but this timeframe may shift.\nYou would be helping our student by walking around the island to install ground control points and then help keep an eye on the drone during flights.\nPack plenty of water and snacks\, since you will be out on Cobb the whole time.\nNote that bathroom access is limited to the boat ramp restrooms and the island itself.\nNo one will be getting wet\, but there will be a potentially chilly ride out there depending on the weather\, so we always recommend lots of layers (i.e. long sleeve + fleece + windbreaker or coat).\nFootwear is person-dependent on the island. Some wear old sneakers\, others wear tall boots\, and others wear hiking boots. We are excited to offer Accomac and Northampton Elementary schools the opportunity to visit Brownsville Preserve and participate in a nature walk covering a variety of habitats\, living vs. nonliving\, and natural resources.\n\n\nMonday November 25th – Kegotank classes\n\nThe day will look something like this:  (** time adjustments will be made according to schools distance to Preserve) \n\n\n\n9:15/9:45 a.m. Students arrive\, buses drop off at the TNC office at Brownsville Preserve\,  11332 Brownsville Rd\, Nassawadox\, VA 23413\n9:45 a.m. Welcome and introduction by VESLT\n10 a.m. 1 mile nature walk with scavenger hunt on the Birding and Wildlife Trail\n11:15 a.m. Activities – identifying bones and shells\, art reflection/journaling based on the scavenger hunt\, platform looking over the marsh and to the Barrier Islands\n12 p.m. Lunch (please bring your lunch\, we will have some snacks available for volunteers)\n1 p.m. 1 mile walk back to the office where busses pick up\n\nIdeally\, we will have enough volunteers (6-8) to co-lead a class of students or to break the classes into smaller groups. I will also be looking for help leading the shell/bone identifying and marsh/Barrier Island viewing platform activities. For the shell/bone identification\, TNC lends us a bin of shells and bones collected locally. For the viewing platform\, the leader will take 5 students at a time up to look out over the marsh. You can talk about marsh habitat\, tides\, and the Barrier Islands with them. We are excited to offer Accomac and Northampton Elementary schools the opportunity to visit Brownsville Preserve and participate in a nature walk covering a variety of habitats\, living vs. nonliving\, and natural resources.\n\n\nTuesday October 29 – Occohannock classes\nWednesday October 30 – Pungoteague classes\nMonday November 25th – Kegotank classes\n\nThe day will look something like this:  (** time adjustments will be made according to schools distance to Preserve) \n\n\n\n9:15/9:45 a.m. Students arrive\, buses drop off at the TNC office at Brownsville Preserve\,  11332 Brownsville Rd\, Nassawadox\, VA 23413\n9:45 a.m. Welcome and introduction by VESLT\n10 a.m. 1 mile nature walk with scavenger hunt on the Birding and Wildlife Trail\n11:15 a.m. Activities – identifying bones and shells\, art reflection/journaling based on the scavenger hunt\, platform looking over the marsh and to the Barrier Islands\n12 p.m. Lunch (please bring your lunch\, we will have some snacks available for volunteers)\n1 p.m. 1 mile walk back to the office where busses pick up\n\nIdeally\, we will have enough volunteers (6-8) to co-lead a class of students or to break the classes into smaller groups. I will also be looking for help leading the shell/bone identifying and marsh/Barrier Island viewing platform activities. For the shell/bone identification\, TNC lends us a bin of shells and bones collected locally. For the viewing platform\, the leader will take 5 students at a time up to look out over the marsh. You can talk about marsh habitat\, tides\, and the Barrier Islands with them. SUMMARY:🌳 Volunteer Opportunity: Scientific Tree Survey with VCR-LTER
DESCRIPTION:The VCR-LTER (Virginia Coast Reserve-Long Term Ecological Research station) down in Oyster is looking for 2-4 volunteers to assist in conducting a fall tree census in Brownsville in late September – early October.\n\n\nThe lab group is planning to visit Sept. 30 – Oct. 4. You may volunteer for one or more of these days. The field work will be to measure the trunk diameter and canopy greenness of trees spanning the coastal forest edge at Brownsville Preserve\, in order to track tree health and mortality.\n\nThese will be long\, buggy days from approximately 8am to 5pm (weather-dependent)\, with a break for lunch\, and working in teams of two people\, with one person measuring and the other person recording the data in each team.\nHiking clothing and marsh boots are strongly recommended\, since there are wet areas in the forest edge. We will supply all materials\, water\, and snacks.\nIf you are available to help out\, please email Sophia Hoffman your availability or add your name and email to this spreadsheet.
