DESCRIPTION:Picture the Shore is a photography contest and art exhibit designed to highlight the work of student\, amateur\, and professional photographers and to connect the public to the beauty and natural environment of the Eastern Shore through visual art. \nStudent\, amateur\, and professional photographers of all ages are invited to submit digital photos that feature the beauty and natural environment of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Student and amateur photos must be taken with a cell phone camera. Professional photographers may take photos with the camera of their choosing. Each photographer can submit one (1) photo. Entries must feature the natural environment of the Eastern Shore and should focus on landscapes\, plants\, recreation\, waterways\, and wildlife. Please read complete Entry Guidelines below before submitting. \nThis contest does not qualify for volunteer hours.

SUMMARY:CE: Wildlife Center of Virginia Bald Eagle Release at Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve
DESCRIPTION:After two months of treatment and care\, Bald Eagle #24-3548 is ready to return to the wild – and you can join us for the release! Please see RSVP info below. \nThis adult Bald Eagle was found near the Tyson Plant in Accomack County on August 27\, 2024. The eagle was spotted on the ground and was not able to fly; observers reported that the bird’s feathers were dirty and crusted. Wildlife rehabilitator Gay Frazee captured the bird and transferred him to the Center for treatment. \nThe Center’s veterinary team noted that the eagle’s feathers were in very poor condition\, but did not find any injuries during the physical exam or on radiographs. During the next two weeks\, vet staff provided fluids and supportive care for the eagle while his feather condition improved. The eagle exhibited signs of severe stress during care\, so the team also gave the bird daily medication for anxiety. \nBy mid-September\, the eagle’s feather condition had improved\, and he was moved to an outdoor flight pen for flight conditioning. The eagle flew strongly and had good form during flight\, but lacked the stamina needed to survive in the wild. The rehab team performed daily exercise sessions with the bird to help him rebuild his stamina. By October 25\, the bird’s stamina had improved\, and the eagle was cleared for release. \nThis eagle will be released at the Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve on Thursday\, October 31\, at 1:00 p.m. Wildlife Center President Meg will give a presentation on the Center’s life-saving work with Bald Eagles and then open the crate door to release the eagle. \nJoin us to watch the bird return home! The release is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to RSVP with the name and number of people in their party through this webform. \nMutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve Address: 28583 Baker Rd\, Parksley\, VA 23421 \nThe release will take place rain or shine\, unless thunderstorms with lightning threaten visitor safety. \n\nLog hours under Better Impact Category 2: Continuing Education.

At the reception\, photographers and VES Land Trust staff will be present to talk more about the photos\, the artistic process\, conservation\, and the land. Attendees will also have a chance to vote for their favorite photo in the amateur and student categories with the People’s Choice Award. The award for professional photographers will be chosen by a panel of judges. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. All photographs will be available for sale with 35% of proceeds benefiting VES Land Trust and their conservation mission.
