ESMNs Support STEAM Event

ESMNs Support STEAM Event

The Education Outreach Committee has completed the first fair of the Autumn season. We attended the STEAM (Science, Technology. Engineering, Agriculture, and Math) event hosted by the Mary N. Smith Alumni Association.

The focus of the STEAM fair was a day of discovery and innovation. The ESMN committee created tree ring necklaces and “spinners” with the children while sharing knowledge about the importance of native trees, as well as trees in general.  They brought a variety of “tree ring samples” to share how trees can talk about the past.  Lastly, all participants could “become” a tree and add their named leaf to a wooden tree.

Master Naturalists Deb Pocock, Brenda Poist, Charles Poist and Tom Young staffed the booth for this fair.

We have two upcoming fairs for which we need volunteers:  Exmore Fall Festival (9/27) and the ESVA Agricultural Fair (10/4).  Please think about volunteering to work the booth for several hours for one of these events if you are able.  Contact:  Brenda Poist at bbioqueen@aol.com
